    • Focus on building relationships first through video content before selling

My YouTube Ads Results: 3,000 Subscribers and 81 Leads on $5/Day

I'm Brad Smith, owner of Automation Links. I've been doing this marketing stuff for the last 10 years and work with over 2500 brands. What I'm about to share with you isn't theory — it's the exact system that generated 3,000 YouTube subscribers, 81 leads, and spending just $5 a day with YouTube ads.

In fact, we average about 150 leads a month from YouTube using this strategy.

Use YouTube in-feed discovery ads with custom audience segments targeting your ideal customer's search terms. Set a $5/day budget, focus on subscriber acquisition first, then convert through follow-up content and bio links.

    • Time to See Results : Within the first campaign cycle (typically 30 days)
    • Best For : Business owners who want to build authority while generating leads

How My $5/Day YouTube Campaign Actually Performs

Let me show you the real numbers from one of my previous YouTube campaigns. I have it set at just $5 a day, and my average cost per view is an eighth of a penny. My cost per million impressions is 4.83, and I've got 328,000 impressions so far.

The ultimate thing we want to look for here is that I've had 5 clicks to my site and 81 conversions. That means it's 81 leads from this single campaign.

    • Key Point : Focus on conversions (leads), not just views or impressions
    • How It Works : YouTube in-feed ads appear as recommended content when people search your target keywords
    • Tools Needed : Google Ads account connected to YouTube channel

Why In-Feed Ads Outperform In-Stream Ads

I don't like the YouTube instream ads — that's the video that's really annoying before you can watch someone else's video. Most of us can't wait to hit the skip button. I've never got a lead that way. You probably never bought something that way, so let's just shut it off and give your customers a good experience.

What I like to recommend is being a recommended ad, a recommended video when somebody is on YouTube or Google. When somebody's on their phone and they search anything about YouTube SEO or YouTube ads, my video is going to show up, and they're going to be able to do two things:

    1. Watch  - They can watch the video, and that's usually what gains me a subscriber
    2. Subscribe  - Direct subscription option right from the ad

Step-by-Step: Setting Up Your $5/Day YouTube Ad Campaign

Step 1: Set Up Your Google Ads Account

The first thing you need to do is have a Google Ads account. Once you set up that Google Ads account, as you're setting it up, it's going to prompt you to connect your YouTube channel. You're going to need some really strategic YouTube videos on there to set up these ads.

Step 2: Create Your Campaign Structure

Once you're all logged into Google Ads:

    1. Hit plus, create campaign, and create new campaign
    2. Scroll down and say create a campaign without guidance
    3. Choose  video  (it's going to show on YouTube, Display Network, and even Gmail)

Step 3: Select the Right Campaign Type

We set up these ads in three ways for our clients as fractional CMOs where we take over the full marketing for businesses. But for today, what I want you to choose is the campaign type that brings in a brand new audience that's never heard of you before to start learning, start building trust and showing your videos for the exact search terms that they look for.

Important : Choose YouTube engagements because we don't want to drive a sale or lead yet. We want to get somebody to find out about you, learn about you, subscribe to your channel, and start building a relationship from your videos. We can sell them later once we build that relationship.

Step 4: Set Your Budget and Targeting

    1. Set your daily budget to just $5 a day
    2. It's going to give you a warning because they want you to spend more
    3. But even spending just $5 a day, you can still get between 17 and 88 conversions
    4. Shut off TV screens because if somebody's watching on TV, it's not easy for them to subscribe

Step 5: Build Your Custom Audience Segments

This is where we build out your ideal audience — your ICP, ideal customer profile. For me, it's anyone in the United States. All my videos are in English, so I have to choose English.

How to Set Up Custom Segments :

    • Type in anything your ideal customer would search into YouTube or Google
    • If they search any of these search terms, this is when it's going to recommend your videos
    • Keep these search terms exactly targeting what your video teaches

For example, the videos I'm going to run in my ads are going to be teaching how to set up YouTube ads. So if anyone searches for YouTube or YouTube growth, I want them to see those videos. These search terms need to be specific for the video you're actually going to show in the ad.

    • Key Point : Also retarget any of your website visitors by connecting your Google Analytics account

Step 6: Optimize Your Ad Creative and Placement

Focus on YouTube in-feed only. I shut all other placements off and focus on YouTube in-feed to get the best views, best subscribers, and best leads for the lowest cost.

    • What YouTube In-Feed Ads Look Like : When somebody searches on their phone for anything about your topic, your video shows up as a recommended video with watch and subscribe options.

Step 7: Set Up Your Video Selection and Copy

    1. Choose up to five videos related to those search terms you set up
    2. All should be related to the same topic for consistency
    3. Shut off shorts placement (these are horizontal videos for longer learning content)
    4. Add your logo or profile picture
    5. Turn off asset optimization so your videos and images don't look weird

ChatGPT Tip : I use ChatGPT to create short headlines, long headlines, and descriptions. I provide ChatGPT with the videos I'm running ads to, and then ask it to help me create the headlines and descriptions.

Why This Strategy Works for Any Business

This method is designed to build trust and long-term engagement. It works across industries by:

    1. Targeting high-intent search terms  directly on YouTube and Google
    2. Using in-feed discovery ads  to gain real subscribers — not just views
    3. Retargeting website visitors  with Google Analytics
    4. Automating ad performance  with strategic campaign structures
    5. Increasing SEO ranking  through video consistency and optimized engagement

    Converting Subscribers Into Leads

You're going to be tempted to try to send somebody to your website or landing page. Don't do that. Send them to your YouTube channel to subscribe to your channel so you can start growing your subscribers. That's the first layer of building a relationship with a new visitor.

They'll end up buying or clicking from a link in your bio or on your follow-up ads. I want to really encourage you to try to get that subscriber, get somebody to learn and watch from you first. And when they're ready, they know where to click.

    The Follow-Up Process :

    • Get subscribers through ads
    • Provide value through regular content
    • Include clear calls-to-action in videos
    • Make links easy to click in your bio
    • Set up follow-up ad campaigns for conversions

Next Steps: Turn Subscribers Into Customers

The key is building relationships first through valuable content, then making it easy for subscribers to take the next step when they're ready. Focus on providing value consistently, and the conversions will follow naturally.
